Patrick Mahomes and his fiancée Brittany Matthews joyfully welcomed their first child, a daughter named Sterling Skye, on Saturday. The proud parents announced the happy news on Instagram, sharing a heartwarming photo of the newborn’s tiny hand grasping her father’s finger.

“Sterling Skye Mahomes, 2/20/21 6lbs 11oz,” Matthews captioned her post on Instagram. Mahomes shared a nearly identical message, writing, “Sterling Skye Mahomes 2/20/21.”

The longtime couple, who began dating during their teenage years, got engaged in early September. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback proposed to the former professional soccer player following the team’s Super Bowl ring ceremony. Later that same month, the couple revealed they were expecting, saying they were “taking a small detour to the wedding.”

Mahomes’ younger brother, Jackson, also expressed his excitement and love for the couple on Instagram. “I’m so happy for you guys and can’t wait for all the adventures and happy times,” he wrote on his Story Sunday. “@patrickmahomes will be the best dad! @brittanylynne will be the best mom! Love you 3.”

The couple discovered they were having a girl in October, celebrating the joyful reveal together. Before finding out the gender, Mahomes shared his feelings on The Drive in September, saying, “I’m just super excited to hopefully have a healthy baby and someone I’ll be able to love for the rest of my life.”

Reflecting on what 2020 taught him personally, Mahomes said, “I think it’s just about growing up, about having the responsibility and evolving as a family.”

“I think we’ve done that — me and Brittany, and the people around me, and I’m just excited for the future ahead of being able to keep building and keep becoming a better person for my family and this world,” he added.

In a December interview with KCSP 610 Sports Radio, the Kansas City Chiefs star reflected on the past year, saying the best thing that happened to him was a “tie” between his engagement and learning he was going to be a father.

“Those things are special, that you don’t get to happen a lot in your life,” he said. “Being able to be a dad and being able to get married here soon, I’m truly thankful for that.”

“I mean, [winning] the Super Bowl was awesome as well,” Mahomes added, “but those things change your life, and it’s bigger than football.”

Looking ahead, Mahomes shared that his main goal for 2021 was to be the “best father I could possibly be” to his baby girl. “This will be a new thing for me, first-time dad. Being able to experience that and go through that, I want to do whatever I can to make our little girl’s life as best as it can possibly be.”
