Jennifer Lawrence has reflected on her past reputation for coming across as “annoying” in interviews throughout her career.

The 35-year-old actress spoke for a profile on her upcoming film Die My Love, published Monday, Oct. 27. In the interview, Lawrence described herself in past interviews as “so hyper” and “so embarrassing,” after the outlet noted they had reviewed her earlier appearances.

“Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” she said, addressing the idea that some perceived her “cool girl” persona as fake. “And so it was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’ ”

Lawrence first gained widespread attention in the early 2010s with films like Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games franchise, and Silver Linings Playbook, for which she won an Academy Award in her mid-20s.

During the interview, she recalled that paparazzi would often follow her while driving through Los Angeles and that she felt overwhelmed by the volume of press obligations for multiple projects.

“I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot-on,” Lawrence said. “I felt—I didn’t feel, I was, I think—rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.”

Lawrence also referenced Grande’s 2016 SNL impression, performed during a Celebrity Family Feud sketch, in which Grande portrayed Lawrence as “a regular person.”

Even while reflecting on her previous interview antics, Lawrence shared a humorous mishap that occurred just before the New Yorker interview: she got her mouth guard stuck.

“Can you imagine?” she said. “After ten years of being, like, ‘I used to be folksy, but everyone thought everything was a shtick,’ then I show up for my first day of this,” she added, pantomiming a clumsy person with a mouth guard.

“I was, like, I will do anything to prevent this from happening. It would be like if I tripped and fell on my way into the room.”

Die My Love, in which Lawrence stars alongside Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte, hits theaters on Nov. 7.
